Nieuw Amsterdam, Suriname Nieuw Amsterdam is the capital of the Commewijne District in Suriname. It is a small coastal town situated near the mouth of the Suriname River just across from Paramaribo, the country’s capital. Its population at the 2004 census was 5, 489, with around 1,200 people living in the main town, most of whom are of Javanese and Hindustani origin.
Nieuw Nickerie Nieuw Nickerie is the third largest city in Suriname with a population estimated at 13,000. It is the capital city of the Nickerie district, and the terminus of the East-West Link. Nieuw Nickerie lies on the mouth of the Nickerie river on the Atlantic coast, opposite the mouth of the Corantijn river (Courantyne) and the Guyanese town of Corriverton(Spring lands), to which a ferry service operates. The main industries are bananas and rice. The town contains a market and several hotels, including the Hotel Ameerali, Hotel de President, Hotel Tropical, Hotel de Vesting and Residence Inn.
Lelydorp Lelydorp is the capital city of Wanica district, located in Suriname. With a population of 15,576 it is the second city in Suriname, after Paramaribo. It is located at around 5°42′N 55°14′Coordinates: 5°42′N 55°14′W. It was originally called Kofi Djompo but was renamed by Cornelis Lely (the governor of Suriname in 1905) and since then it is known as Lelydorp. Cornelis Lely, who was responsible for many large water construction projects in the Netherlands, became the governor of Suriname. Its population consists of a mixture of Indonesian Javanese, Hindustani, Creole, European and Portuguese Jews. Names of roads and street in Lelydorp, like Dessa Sidodadi, Tawajari, are typical original names from Indonesia. The small river “Tawajari Creek” divides Lelydorp from Saramacca.
